Who has ever thought that Volkswagen Beetles are not cute? I always thought I'd like to have one, but never thought they were appropriate; after all, the VW Vanagons that I had been driving for about 20 years always were very useful for hauling lots of things and kids. But when I was transferred to a job 25 miles south of my house, to a place where there was lots of traffic, stop and go driving got really old and expensive really fast. When the opportunity came up to get a one year old slightly used 2000 New Beetle, I snapped it up. The rest is history.

I have always liked personalized license plates. I think the extra money you pay for the plate goes to some ecological fund, so I think it is a worthwhile thing to do and it doesn't cost that much extra to have them. Years ago I had a Volkswagen Vanagon that was a brownish color. We were in California then and I had the plate PELICN. It would have been PELICAN but at that time, license plates only had 6 digits. Do you know what the most requested 7 digit plate requested when they offered 7 digit plates? It was PORSCHE. Or at least that is what I heard. My wife had a small Honda and her plate was SEASHL because she collected Sea Shells.

Anyway when I got my little yellow Volkswagen New Beetle, I saw lots of plates on other Beetles that had BUG in the name. When I had a blue Vanagon, the plate DONOVAN had already been taken. So I thought DONOBUG was a cool name. Now I can never have any car but a Volkswagen New Beetle because DONOBUG would look silly on a Prius or something else...
