Mikey is a voracious reader. I read constantly as you can tell from the Book Statistics pages. I personally own around 3,000 books, most of them in the Science Fiction Genre. I began reading and keeping track of my books in the 70's. I had gotten a job which let me travel a lot and when I got to a new town, I looked up and went to all the used book stores I could find. I used to have 5081 Computer Punch cards and I carried around one card for each author. I wrote the names of the books I had for each author on this card to keep myself from buying a second copy. Eventually this became a type written list. Once PC databases came around, I built a database using RBase. At some point I moved the database to run using Microsoft Access.

In 1995, during her summer vacation, I paid my teenage daughter to go through all the books I had and enter them into a database. The items I had her record were Author, the Title, when the book was written and the number of pages. Later on, I made some table and code changes to record series so I could group the books that way. Once I had this database, I began to record Dates Read so that I could track my reading. Any book that is listed, if the date read file is blank was read before 1995 or still is waiting to be read. Ultimately I was able to to migrate this to SQL Server 2008 and this application uses this database building queries dynamically.

When you search for authors and titles, you will only find Authors that I have read. Or that my wife has read. Almost all the Mystery Book Type were books she reads.
